A conversation between Mathilde Roman and Sergio Carvalho about the definition of "scenography" and the dialogue between artist - curator - architect within the construction of an exhibition.

Scenography is the main challenge of contemporary art exhibitions. Oftenly perceived as a simple technical specificity for the spatial organisation of works, it actually implies essential questions about the relationship between bodies and artworks, as well as elements of articulation that engage diverse ways of experience and thought.

Mathilde Roman is an art critic and exhibition curator, professor of art and scenography at the Pavillon Bosio and the Ecole Supérieure d'Arts Plastiques of Monaco. In her essay "Inhabiting the exhibition. The artist and the scenography" (ed. Manuella 2020), she examines the evolution of contemporary artistic practices, in particular the dialogue between image, space and bodies in a redefinition of the exhibition as a medium. She sees interviews as an essential step of the research and conceives critical writing as collaborative.

Sergio Carvalho is an architect and partner of the 2001 office in Esch, a professor at the TU Kaiserslautern (Germany) and works actively in the Luxembourgish cultural scene.

Together with Deimantas Narkevičius , they created an exhibition space, that shows a dynamic environment, inviting for an interactive exchange of visitors in a dialogue with the abstract architecture of the place.
