Listening performance - immersive sound walk - public space
Today we’re going on a mission.
Not with a magnifying glass.
Not with a treasure map.
But with antennas.
Have you ever really listened to the city? Not just heard it… but listened?
What sounds could you catch with your ears?
Buzzing cars?
People talking?
Whistling birds?
A dog barking in a street further away?
And have you ever been somewhere far from here? On a trip? Or in your dreams?
Did the birds whistle differently there?
Did people speak another language?
Was there a sea that roared louder than passing traffic?
A Chorus of Footsteps takes you on a special walk. With a sound catcher leading the way, antennas on our heads, we set off on a listening expedition through the city. Each of us is equipped with a backpack containing a small loudspeaker hidden inside.
As we walk, our antennas pick up sounds from the air. Sounds from places far away. And suddenly they appear in our backpacks. Our ears open wide and catch sounds you may have never heard in the city before…
Thai cowbells.
The breathing of someone asleep.
Crunching footsteps in the snow.
And… extraterrestrial buzzing?
Our captured sounds blend with everything that is already sounding in the city. Together they become a strange and wonderful mixture that makes us listen differently, look differently. The city and our experience are played with and reshaped.
The people we pass have no idea… and yet, they are listening along with us.
