A workshop on building sound devices and music machines
This multi-day workshop revolves around noise, sound, and music - but not through conventional instruments. Instead, we will create small sound machines capable of producing tones on their own. To begin, we will build electronic chirping machines. Using soldering irons, we will assemble electronic components into a circuit powered by solar cells. As soon as light hits the solar cells, cheerful bird-like chirping can be heard. As the workshop progresses, we will also build wild noisemakers that can knock and strike on their own. These devices can make various objects resonate, such as small metal plates, cups, or cardboard boxes.
Afterwards, we will create self-playing kalimbas from motors and empty tin cans that can play our favorite melodies automatically.
At the end of the workshop, we will present our sound machines in a small demonstration. No prior technical knowledge is required, and all devices built during the workshop can of course be taken home.
Workshop consisting of three two-hour sessions over three days for a single school class.
Participation is mandatory on all three days.
