How can we look towards tomorrow through what surrounds us today? And what can the remnants of the past tell us in the present?
The workshop explores the theme of “ruins” within the exhibition through a simple printmaking technique: modelling-clay stamping. Ordinary modelling clay is used as a printing block. Pressed onto three-dimensional shapes, structures and objects, it takes on a new form each time. Traces of what was once there then appear on paper. These traces are sampled, combined and reproduced, playfully giving rise to something new.
For the workshop, participants will have access to shapes, patterns and structures taken from the urban environment of Esch-sur-Alzette. These are complemented by materials and objects from the FerroForum Ressourcerie, which carry traces of the region’s industrial past and will also serve as starting points for creating prints.
By combining, layering and reproducing these different traces, new portraits of Esch emerge: images in which the city of today, its ruins and its industrial history come together. In this way, something new is playfully created from traces of the past.
Weather permitting, we will also go outside with the students to explore the city and collect shapes, structures and traces to complement and enrich their graphic creations.
Since 2024, studio pari–pari has been developing its STADTSTEMPEL project, an ongoing archival practice in public space. Palm-sized fragments of urban environments, captured as modelling-clay impressions, have already been collected in Warsaw, Zurich, Vienna and Frankfurt.
