AWARE x Luxembourg: issues and perspectives in research on women artists

The AWARE x Luxembourg program was launched in 2025 with the financial support of the City of Esch-sur-Alzette and Konschthal Esch. It places the country within an international research network dedicated to women artists from the 16th century to the present day: AWARE – Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions.

Co-founded in 2014 by Camille Morineau – an art historian specialising in women artists – AWARE now counts Luxembourg among the European countries represented in its index. The programme thus helps to bring visibility to the careers, works and contributions of Luxembourg women artists to art history.

Bringing together several contributors to AWARE x Luxembourg, this discussion will look back at the creation of the programme and explore the specific challenges of research dedicated to women artists in Luxembourg. As the programme enters its second year, what sources and archives make it possible to trace their careers? What direction has been taken to continue its development? And how can new figures and new narratives be brought to light?

Through the experiences and research of the various contributors, the discussion will highlight both the challenges and the opportunities offered by this collective momentum to help renew the history of art in Luxembourg.
