Julien Hübsch’s artistic practice is deeply engaged with the dynamics of urban space, focusing on the material traces of human intervention and the evolving aesthetics of contemporary vandalism. His work examines how these traces are inscribed within the urban fabric, investigating their permanence, erasure, and the mechanisms by which they are assimilated or erased. Engaging with the discourse of post-vandalism, he navigates the shifting boundaries of destruction and creation, transgression and integration.
Hübsch is particularly inspired by the involuntary compositions that emerge on construction sites and in urban signage – ephemeral assemblages shaped by necessity, chance, and decomposition. His practice seeks to extract and recontextualize their inherent artistic qualities, often by incorporating found materials as integral parts of his work. The painterly sensibility that informs his approach to composition and color, combined with a deliberate selection of materials, underscores the interplay between spontaneity and artistic intent, revealing the poetic potential inherent in the urban environment.
Julien Hübsch (born 1995, in Esch-sur-Alzette) lives and works between Luxembourg and Germany. He studied at the Bauhaus University in Weimar, the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig, and the Kunsthochschule in Mainz where he studied under Shannon Bool. In 2023 he received the Prix Grand-Duke Adolphe, awarded by the Salon du CAL & La Cour Grand-Ducale. He was resident at the Cité International des Arts in Paris and at the Darling Foundry in Montreal, Canada in 2024.
