In 1985, exactly forty years ago, the sixteen-year-old Gregor Schneider moved to an empty two-storey building on Unterheydener Strasse 12 in his hometown, Rheydt. Since then, he has been building rooms within the rooms of the house, rebuilding them, dismantling them, replicating them, and rebuilding them again. Since the mid-1990s, he has also been removing the rooms in order to show them in exhibitions in Bern, Frankfurt am Main, Paris and at the Venice Biennale, among other places. Haus u r is a work unique in art history that cannot be completed and disturbs and attracts its visitors in equal measure.

In this book, Ory Dessau traces the exciting history of Haus u r and its creator, following the path Schneider took with further works in the 2000s – right up to Sterberaum (death room), which, like Haus u r, is art without end.
